CONGRATS UNION DRUMLINE!

Union High School’s Indoor Drumline earned First Place at the 2023 Winter Guard & Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO) State Championship event on Saturday April 8.  Just one week after the Union HS Winter Guard won the WGPO Scholastic A Class State Championship, the Union HS Indoor Drumline was crowned the Percussion Division Scholastic Open Classification State Champion with a score of 89.00, the highest among all 80+ competing ensembles of the entire WGPO circuit during the 2023 season.

Returning to competition for the first time since Spring 2020 when the pandemic truncated a promising season, the 2023 Union Indoor Drumline travels to Dayton, Ohio to compete at the WGI Percussion World Championship, April 19-22. Supported by a sensational team of teaching staff, creative designers, & volunteers, the Drumline is led by first-year Union Percussion Director Mr. Garett Dwyer, UHS Class of 2018 alumnus and 2022 graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

The Union Indoor Drumline cordially invites everyone from the Redhawks community to enjoy a special World Championships Send-Off performance of their vibrant & technical competitive program entitled “Born of Sand & Fire”, held in the Union HS Gym at 7:00pm on Monday, April 17.  Admission is free and open to the public.

VARSITY GUARD BRINGS HOME FIRST PLACE AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

A huge congratulations is in order to the Union High School Varsity Winter Guard, winning their 2023 State Championship! The Winter Guard & Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO ) competitive circuit held its annual championship event on Saturday, April 1 at Yukon (OK) High School, presenting nearly 70 competing units.

With a stunningly technical and beautiful final performance, Union Varsity edged-out its next closest competitor by just one one-hundredth (.01) of a point. Furthermore, Union Varsity’s score was the highest among all competitors from 7 different classifications. 2023 marks the first time in many years that Union Varsity has won a state championship, and for this the entire Union Bands family & Redhawks community is ecstatic and proud! Congrats to the students, their lead director Kylee Hubbard, the teaching staff, and volunteers on a memorable performance and season.

Kudos also to the Union JV Guard, placing 7th in their classification. Comprised almost entirely of 8th Graders, this ensemble bested 13 other competitors, 10 of these being varsity-level units. The JV performers’ growth in skill & artistry in the course of this season has been remarkable.
