Details Regarding Home Football Game Including Safety Concerns

Dear Union High School Band Students and Parents: we are excited to welcome a new school year and a new season of supporting the Union Redhawks!  Below you will find detailed information about tomorrow night’s Union home football game as well as specifics regarding safety concerns.

EVENT SAFETY & SECURITY

In light of recent events around our state, and of threats of harm made to Union campuses and other local municipalities, we want to share with you the following:

  • The safety and wellbeing of students continues to be the highest priority of Union Public Schools.

  • Union takes very seriously any threat of violence, and continues to work closely with Tulsa Police, Broken Arrow Police, the FBI, and other law enforcement entities to ensure the safety of its students, employees, and visitors.

  • Enhanced security measures, including additional Union Campus & Tulsa Police Department officers (more security personnel than present at a typical Union Varsity Event), will be on-site patrolling the Union HS Varsity home football event on Friday, Sept 1.

  • Officers will be on-site at Union Stadium during the entirety of the day on Friday, Sept 1 patrolling for unusual or suspicious activity.

  • Emergency shelter locations have been designated in the event of an active shooter or other urgent situation. Specifics on these indoors locations have already been communicated to students, however cannot be shared via email, as we must avoid publicizing the blue-print of our safety plans in order to avoid sharing these sensitive details with potential harm-doers. Parents should feel free to visit with us in-person should they desire specific information about our student shelter locations.

  • We are confident that this Friday’s game, as well as future campus events, will be safe, fun gatherings for our students, other participants, patrons, and spectators; we will, however, collectively maintain vigilance and caution against anyone who might be a threat to our students, staff, volunteers, and other friends & neighbors in attendance.

Varsity Guard Brings Home First Place at State Championship

A huge congratulations is in order to the Union High School Varsity Winter Guard, winning their 2023 State Championship! The Winter Guard & Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO ) competitive circuit held its annual championship event on Saturday, April 1 at Yukon (OK) High School, presenting nearly 70 competing units.

With a stunningly technical and beautiful final performance, Union Varsity edged-out its next closest competitor by just one one-hundredth (.01) of a point. Furthermore, Union Varsity’s score was the highest among all competitors from 7 different classifications. 2023 marks the first time in many years that Union Varsity has won a state championship, and for this the entire Union Bands family & Redhawks community is ecstatic and proud! Congrats to the students, their lead director Kylee Hubbard, the teaching staff, and volunteers on a memorable performance and season.

Kudos also to the Union JV Guard, placing 7th in their classification. Comprised almost entirely of 8th Graders, this ensemble bested 13 other competitors, 10 of these being varsity-level units. The JV performers’ growth in skill & artistry in the course of this season has been remarkable.
